In line with its civic mission, the Opéra national de Nancy-Lorraine has included children’s choirs in its artistic programming since 2019. Building on four seasons of experience in musical outreach to young audiences, the 2023–2024 season saw the launch of the Maîtrise citoyenne itinérante — the Children's Outreach Chorus.
This educational programme aims to reduce inequality in access to performing arts training for children aged 8 to 15, with a particular focus on those living in rural areas and designated priority neighbourhoods within the Opéra’s outreach region. The initiative seeks to counter the effects of social determinism that can limit access to lyric arts and artistic practice, whether due to geographic, socio-economic, or age-related barriers.
Each year, the Children's Outreach Chorus brings together an average of 75 children between the ages of 8 and 15. In 2025–2026, they will contribute artistically to four productions: Orlando, On joue chez vous !, Hymns, and Oh La La La!
The programme serves seven localities across Greater Nancy and the Lunévillois region — all identified as either rural or priority urban zones, where access to arts training is often limited. In partnership with the Nancy-Metz Education Authority, participating children receive between 120 and 200 hours of vocal and operatic training throughout the school year.
